Transformational Leadership

<<<back

A Workshop-Retreat on Trasformational Leadership
Facilitator: Dinesh Chandra
The only way to change the world is to change yourself.

This is the essence of the Transformational Leadership workshop.  Organizational change requires a step-by-step approach.  Creating a shared vision is the first step.  Defining business focus (Mission) and a winning strategy follow.  Structure follows strategy.  Identifying key processes for breakthrough changes and starting pilot actions come next.  Re-designing systems to align them with the new vision ensures that change stays.

Organizational transformation is a complex process.  It requires sensitive leadership, which inspires people to give their best.  When those in positions of authority demonstrate that they are beginning to change for the better, others get the necessary energy to improve their own ways of working.

Transformational Leadership is a process of improving oneself at physical, emotional and intellectual levels.  This concept is based on the simple truth that everyone has unlimited potential deep inside, which is not being realized.  If we learn to access our own “consciousness”, we can transcend our present habits to make the desired change happen in our way of working.

The Transformational Leadership workshop is designed specifically for leaders who want to develop insights for this journey of transformation. The workshop aims at helping leaders develop clarity on the direction they need to take for sustained personal change.

This journey of personal transformation could be enhanced by the presence of a partner - spouse, colleague, friend, business partner or any other person who could be a good “sounding board”.   If you feel that this could also be an opportunity to express yourself authentically through a meaningful partnership, you are welcome to invite a significant person in your life to participate along with you. Further, this could be the beginning of a dialogue on how successful partnerships can be created within a unit - family, organization, or community.   It is, however, not a condition to participate in the workshop.  You are most welcome to attend alone.

Excerpts from Susana Barciela’s (of the Miami Herald) article in the Book
“Insights On Leadership”, written after attending our workshop in April 1996
at Dharamshala.

“The thing about desire and attachment emotions is that when they begin, they feel like friends.  But they bring trouble in the long term.  They are possessive.  They make us reluctant to let go.  Those emotions may be very attractive for a businessperson.” “HOW” is important also.  Because the end is always used by corporations as justifications to do inhuman things.… What will I do with this prison of success?  How can I renew myself, so I can renew my company? It starts with you deciding you have to relate to your company in a different way.  Community  is not the point.  It’s the container.” “ I am not against idealism, but we should also look at our feet.  Rituals can become an opium, too.  That is not enough.  We have to take tougher subjects: the systems, the processes, the structure.  Otherwise, we end up with all this drinking coffee and hugging and end up with another religion.” “ We all want transformation.  The truth is, transformation never ends.  We comfort ourselves living on the surface.  But I have found many who long for something deeper and more satisfying.  Even in business and even in America.  It’s up to us to create it. The point isn’t to go to the Himalayas.  Learn to climb.”

Workshop Process

The Transformational Leadership workshop is an intense three-day experience of reflection and contemplation. Intense dialogue, silence, meditation and long walks in natural surroundings, story telling around the campfire, etc. are some of the features of this unique experience.

Getting to know the person behind the title

SESSION 2 & 3:     The five senses and their role in leadership:
                             The power of listening
                             The essence of observations
                             The magic of touch

SESSION 4:           The nature of the mind and its emotions

Sharing our peak experiences

SESSION 5:           Exploring our “down side” or low moments

Unstated emotional expectations from those we care for

      Things that bother us

SESSION 6:           The process of community building

SESSION 7:           The intellect and its power

Values that are dear to us

My personal mission

SESSION 8             My transformational question

   My insights

  My plans

SESSION 9:      Linking personal change to organizational transformation

Community Building Stages
(M. Scott Peck)

Pseudo Community - Pretend already a community; decision-making  process and nature of relationships goes unchallenged

Chaos  - Deep differences emerge; group  tries to obliterate differences

Emptiness - Failure, hopelessness, uncertainty & ambiguity replace control; giving up personal agenda, openness and true listening occurs

Community - Extraordinary healing & converting  occurs, group feels  “one”

Participants’ Comments  (from earlier TL workshops)

“I consider the experience to have been enriching both to the mind and the spirit. This experience has strengthened my resolve to continue learning.”

“The workshop was a very good opportunity for me to go inwards and address my deeper dilemmas. It has helped me not only to set focus and direction to my long term goals but also to re-discover my past and realize that whatever I am today has a direct bearing on my past.”

“There is nothing I can do about it.  The struggle is the solution.  Values and organization: we want them to come together.  The ultimate test is how to take these ideas to improve the quality of lives for workers at lower levels.  If you can’t do that at your level, how can you ask others to do it?  You have no right to demand”.
